Shoulder Tendinopathy includes a wide range of tendon injuries in the shoulder. For example, if the rotator cuff tendons in the shoulder are injured, it is referred to as ‘Rotator cuff Tendinopathy’. Rotator cuff Tendinopathies include the following:
- Supraspinatus Tendinopathy
- Subscapularis Tendinopathy
- Infraspinatus Tendinopathy
- Bicipital Tendinopathy
Shoulder Tendinopathy Types:
- Shoulder Tendonitis occurs as a result of overuse which causes inflammation and tear of the tendon(s)
- Shoulder Tendinosis occurs as a result of degeneration of the tendon(s). The small tears appears in the tissue.
Causes of Shoulder Tendinopathy:
- Shoulder Impingement: The rotator cuff tendon impacts against the acromion bone. With repeated shoulder impingement, the rotator cuff tendon becomes swollen and inflamed via compression and friction forces.
- Shoulder Bursitis results from a combination of shoulder impingement and rotator cuff tendinopathy
- Sports include: volleyball, baseball and softball players
Symptoms of Shoulder Tendinopathy:
- Pain at the front of the shoulder
- ‘Clicking’ of the shoulder or an arc of shoulder pain when the arm is lifted to shoulder height
- Loss of shoulder movement
- Inflammation
- Shoulder weakness
- Shoulder stiffness
- Shoulder pain with movements ie. reach behind back
- Nocturnal pain when sleeping on the injured side
Assessment:
Your physiotherapist will provide a correct diagnosis of your shoulder condition based on your clinical examination, symptom behaviour and history.
Treatment:
Physiotherapy should be considered as the first line of treatment. The initial focus will be to reduce both the inflammation and pain in the shoulder, followed with a range of physiotherapy techniques and modalities tailored to meet each individual need.
