Wry neck is a common neck condition characterised by neck muscle spasms, severe pain and stiffness in the neck and or upper back. Wry neck is where the joints of the neck are locked or an injury to the disc. This results in limited neck movements and postural deformity, where you find you are unable to completely look up and or rotate your head.  

Causes: 

  • Sudden and quick movements of the neck
  • Activities performed with poor posture
  • Poor sleeping posture
  • Repetitive or prolong neck movements 
  • Excessive lifting

Risk Factors:

  • Unsupported pillow
  • Prolong bending, slouching and sitting ie. at a computer, driving
  • Inappropriate lifting techniques
  • Poor core stability
  • Sedentary lifestyle
  • Poor posture
  • Neck muscle weakness and/ or tightness
  • Neck joint stiffness

 Symptoms:

  •  Sharp neck pain typically on the one side
  • Limited neck movements especially towards the painful side
  • Ache in the neck
  • Neck muscle spasms

Assessment: 

Your physiotherapist will provide a correct diagnosis of your condition based on your clinical examination, symptom behaviour and history. 

Treatment:

The recovery period varies between individuals with wry neck. With appropriate physiotherapy treatment and an individualised exercise program, individuals may be pain-free a couple of days, and recover within 2-3 weeks. Treatment will include: Education advice and assurance, electrotherapy, manual therapy and exercise prescription/ home exercise program.
