Physiotherapy And Muscle Cramps

A muscle cramp is a spontaneous and uncontrolled spasm in a muscle. A muscle cramp can be painful and last for anywhere from under a minute to hours at a time. While muscle cramps will typically resolve on their own, they can occur regularly if the underlying cause is not addressed.

Muscle cramps in the foot and calf are among the most common, but any muscle in the body can be affected. Some examples of muscle cramps can be the result of taking certain medications, or the result of an underlying medical condition.

Narrowed arteries, diabetes, sciatica and thyroid dysfunction can all bring about recurring muscle cramps throughout various parts of the musculature.

Examples of Muscle Cramps:

  1. True Cramps are the result of spontaneous nerve overactivity; an oversupply of stimulation to certain muscle groups. Prolong and strenuous exercise can exacerbate this cause.
  2. Injury muscle cramps occur as a protective mechanism. They may result from an injury where the cramp functions to minimise movement and to stabilise the injured area.
  3. Rest cramps are common in the older population. Usually occurring at night.
  4. Dehydration cramps are due to excessive fluid loss from perspiration.
  5. Pregnancy related muscle cramps. These are more common in the second and third trimester and typically affect the feet and calf muscles.

Symptoms:

  • Sudden and forceful involuntarily spasms in the muscle with accompanying pain and discomfort.
  • Muscle twitching.
