Physiotherapy and Osteoporosis

Osteoporosis is a common condition that affects more than 1 million Australians (especially the middle aged to elderly women population), which results from bone loss as part of the natural ageing process. Osteoporosis increases the risk of fractures (broken bones) which can further cause changes to posture, muscle and joint pain, affect balance and increase the chances of falling.

Risk factors

There are a number of risk factors that can lead to the onset of osteoporosis.

  • Age > middle aged to elderly
  • Gender > women

  • Chronic stomach conditions
  • Type 1 diabetes
  • Overactive thyroid
  • Lack of exposure to sunlight
  • Low calcium levels
