A bulging disc (also known as a slipped disc or protruding disc) is an injury that occurs anywhere along the spine, but more commonly in the lower back between the fourth and fifth lumbar vertebral bodies, or the fifth lumbar vertebral body and the sacrum. People with a bulging disc may experience a sudden onset of discomfort or back pain during an activity and they may experience stiffness and pain following activity, especially the morning after.
Aggravating factors
There are a number of factors that can aggravate a bulging disc, such as:
- Prolonged sitting
- Moving from sitting to standing ie. getting out of the car
- Bending forward
- Twisting
- Lifting
- Sneezing or coughing
Easing factors
As the symptoms can be quite extreme, it’s important that you do what you can to help things settle down as much as possible. Two things that you can do are resting (from activities) and lying down with your feet up.
Symptoms
The symptoms of a bulging disc can vary based on the individual and the severity of the condition. Some of these may include:
- Pain in the lower back (central or one or both sides of the spine)
- Pain radiating down one or both legs into the buttocks, thigh, lower leg or foot
- Occasional muscle spasms, pins and needles, numbness or weakness
- In severe cases, walking with a marked limp and unable to straighten spine
Physiotherapy road to recovery:
Bulging disc injuries usually take several weeks to settle as they will remain vulnerable and weak for a minimum of 6 weeks. Recovery involves a 4 stage process.
