Physiotherapy and Cervicogenic Headaches

Cervicogenic headache is referred to as pain in the head, where the cause stems from the cervical spine, disc, nerves, and or soft tissues around the area.

Causes:

  • Excessive strain secondary to poor postures while working ie. Prolong sitting, awkward neck posture
  • Recreational or sporting injury or, motor vehicle accident
  • Osteoarthritis of the upper neck joints (usually the late middle aged to older age group population)

Symptoms:

  • Throbbing head pain
  • Reduced neck range of motion due to stiffness in the neck
  • Headache dependent on certain neck movements and or postures
  • Pain may radiate from the neck and or back of the head up to the front of the head and or around the eyes
  • Pain on one side of the head
  • Light-headedness, visual disturbances and unsteadiness

Treatment:

Physiotherapy treatment is aimed at targeting the cause of the pain in the neck. Depending on each individual, treatment for cervicogenic headaches include some of the following: education, advice and assurance, manual therapy, electrotherapy, exercise prescription and equipment. There is increasing evidence supporting the effectiveness of physiotherapy treatments for cervicogenic headaches.
